Pilar Cysts: Easy-to-Treat Lumps on the Scalp

Pilar cysts are small, harmless lumps that usually appear on the scalp. They form from hair follicles and are filled with a protein called keratin—the same stuff in your hair and nails.

People often call them scalp cysts, and they look smooth and firm. They are usually not painful and grow slowly, but they can sometimes run in families.

The good news? Pilar cysts are easy to treat. A simple minor surgery can remove them completely, usually under local anesthesia. Once removed, they rarely come back.

If you notice a lump on your scalp, it’s best to get it checked by a doctor. Most of the time, it’s nothing serious, and treatment is quick and simple.
