Inside the Kit: The Dermatoscope 🔍

When you come in for a consultation, you’ll see me reach for a small, handheld device that looks like a high-tech magnifying glass. This is a dermatoscope, and it’s one of the most important tools in my kit.
What does it actually do?
To the naked eye, a mole is just a spot. A dermatoscope uses polarised light and high-grade lenses to "cancel out" surface reflections. This lets me see beneath the skin's surface to view structures, patterns, and blood vessels invisible to the human eye.
Why this matters for you:
Accuracy: It helps me tell the difference between a harmless "age spot" and something that needs more urgent attention.
Peace of Mind: I can often provide immediate reassurance by identifying benign patterns during your check.
Better Surgery: It helps me map out the exact edges of a lesion, ensuring the most precise and aesthetic result possible.
I’ve recently completed advanced training at Cardiff University specifically in dermoscopy to ensure I’m bringing the latest diagnostic skills to the Nottingham clinic.
