What Does "Awake Surgery" Actually Feel Like? 💉

One of the reasons people delay minor surgery is the fear of the needle or the pain. If you’ve been putting off a procedure because you’re nervous, here is exactly what to expect from local anaesthesia.
1. The "Bee Sting"
To numb the area, I use a very fine needle—much smaller than the ones used for blood tests. You will feel a sharp pinch for about 5 to 10 seconds. Some patients describe it as a "sting," but it passes almost instantly.
2. The "Numb" Phase
Within seconds, the area goes completely numb. I always "test" the area before starting to ensure you can’t feel a thing.
3. Pressure, Not Pain
During the procedure, you are wide awake. You won't feel any pain, but you might feel a bit of "pressure" or a "tugging" sensation as I work. It’s a strange feeling, but it isn't uncomfortable. Most of my patients spend the time chatting with me and can't believe how quickly it's all done!
4. The "Coming Round"
The numbness usually lasts for 1 to 2 hours after you leave the clinic. As it wears off, the area might feel a bit tender, like a dull bruise, but most people find that standard over-the-counter paracetamol is the most they need.
