What is Histology, and Why Does it Matter?

When you have a mole, skin lesion, or other growth removed, we normally send a sample to the lab for histology. But what exactly is histology, and why do we do it even for non-suspicious lesions?

Histology is the microscopic study of tissue. In skin surgery, it helps us to confirm the nature of a removed growth, even if it appears harmless. A trained specialist examines the sample under a microscope to check for any unexpected abnormal cells that might not be visible to the naked eye.

This step is crucial because some skin conditions can look completely normal on the surface but have underlying changes that need attention. By analysing the tissue, we can ensure that nothing concerning is missed and that no further treatment is needed.

At Dr Jenna Wa Skin Surgery, we send the majority of removed tissue for histology, providing you with peace of mind. While most results confirm there is nothing to worry about, this thorough approach ensures the best care for your skin health.

We look forward to welcoming you to the clinic soon, and helping you maintain healthy skin for years to come!
