That stubborn lump beneath your skin can be confusing! Let's clear up the mystery of the sebaceous cyst (also known as an epidermoid cyst).
What is it?
A cyst is essentially a small, closed sac or capsule located just beneath the skin's surface. It's filled with a soft, yellowish substance called keratināthe same protein that makes up your skin and hair.
Where do they come from?
Cysts form when the duct leading from a skin gland becomes damaged or blocked, often due to trauma, acne, or shaving. The skin cells and oil continue to collect, forming the palpable, slow-growing lump.
Do I need to remove it?
Cysts are almost always benign (non-cancerous). However, you should consider professional removal if:
Itās growing: Large cysts can become uncomfortable or restrict movement.
Itās inflamed: Cysts can become painful, red, and tender if they get irritated or infected.
Cosmetic concern: You simply don't like the way it looks, especially on the face or scalp.
If you have a persistent lump that you want removed, the best treatment is complete surgical excision - which safely removes the entire cyst sac to prevent it from refilling or returning.
